Good People,
This message contains info on:
1. Family Rights Act - what do you think?
2. Murtari Updates - NonViolent Action, all charges dismissed
3. Finding a Congressional Sponsor - E-mail petitions.
4. Mother's Day 2000 - check it out!
1. Family Rights Act - what do you think?
-----------------------------------------
We have gotten some excellent feedback on the Family Rights Act we
would like to see passed by Congress:
http://www.kids-right.org/act.htm
Two other sites have items that are somewhat similiar and you may
wish to review. Probably the most significant item of difference is
our proposal that the use of a "jury" is essential to the protection
of civil liberties:
http://www.ancpr.org/resolution.htm
http://childrens-justice.org/petition-4-online.htm
We are not sure if we should try to address the following. We welcome
some proposed wording for the following difficult questions which
have come in our email:
a. If a parent is found "unfit to parent" -- how much contact should
they have / how are they restored to equality?
b. You are an adoptive parent for many years -- suddenly the
"biological" parent appears and wants to be "involved".
c. You are a Grandparent -- do you have "rights?"
2. Murtari Updates - NonViolent Action, all charges dismissed
----------------------------------------------------------------
John Murtari, after some 30 days in jail and over a dozen arrests
with charges ranging from trespass (a violation), to violating an
order (a misdeamenor) is free to continue his actions. Syracuse City
Judge Higgins dismissed all remaining charges on May 2nd. For a full
history see - http://www.kids-right.org/protest_dm.htm
He owes a great deal of thanks to Mr. Charles Keller, a Hiscock Legal
Aid Attorney assigned to his case. Mr. Keller did extensive research
into case law and his "enthusiasm" certainly helped convinced the
Judge. A key point was made by Mr. Keller when he told John, "You are
so nice and friendly when you walk into the building. You're only
carrying a small picture of your son -- you don't interfere with
anything -- they don't know how to handle you....you present a
sympathetic figure..."
These results should make us appreciate the real power in NonViolent
Action.
Mr. Keller is also an instructor at the Syracuse University Law
School. As "time permits" he is happy to answer questions from groups
considering similar actions (cakeller@syr.edu). Please do NOT put him
on general mailing lists!
John is taking a "break" -- he is happy to announce he will be flying
out west to spend the weekend with his son, Domenic. He should also
have Domenic for 6 weeks this summer. They both cherish this
time. John will spend his time working on legislation and spreading
the Civil Rights News.
3. Your Representative could be our Sponsor for Civil Rights
------------------------------------------------------------
Several members of Congress, both in the House and Senate have NOT
been afraid to voice their feelings regarding the Elian Gonzalez
case. The focus of our activity is finding a member who will
introduce Civil Right's Legislation into Congress. We just need to
ask.
Congressman James Walsh, in 8 years, had never had a visitor
asking for Family Law Reform! There is NO substitute for a personal
letter or a personal visit from a constituent.
E-mail petitions may not do a lot. We found that Congressman Walsh's
office gets about 1500 E-Mail messages a day! One staffer scans the
mail -- you can imagine most of it is deleted. How much effort does
it take to send an email petition? How much effort does it take to
write a personal letter, or to actually drive to a local office. If
you were a member of Congress, who would you feel is more concerned
about their issue -- and more likely to VOTE?
4. Mother's Day 2000 - check it out!
------------------------------------
We've had over a dozen people sign up to visit their Members
of Congress. Check the list, if you are nearby, please consider
signing up & contacting them to go along.
http://www.mothersday2000.org/state_activity.htm
We are in the final stages of planning. The Group will be sending
out News Releases to local media in the areas where visits are
planned. We can use your help, contact:
Mary Chancellor: info@mothersday2000.org
Take the time, do something positive for yourself and for your
children! We will all feel better!
